Macedonia

Macedonia is one of Greece’s largest provinces extending from the latitude of Mount Olympus to the country’s northern borders with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria. It has very varied terrain and is home to a correspondingly diverse set of wine growing sub-regions. Western Macedonia is mountainous. In its territory is Naoussa, one of Greece’s most famous appellations in the foothills of Mount Vermio which produces wines from the classic red grape, Xinomavro; in the uplands to the north west is Amyndeon, another Xinomavro appellation but which also grows white wines. Our producers from Western Macedonia are Alpha, Kir-Yianni, Karydas and Voyatzis. The wine regions of Central Macedonia (with the exception of Goumenissa on the edge of the Vardar valley in the north which makes wines from Xinomavro and Negoska) are relatively close to the sea. The region encompasses the vineyards on Chalcidice including Mount Athos. The Gerovassiliou estate is situated in Central Macedonia, not far from Greece’s second city, Salonica. Eastern Macedonia includes the vineyards below Mount Pangaion and those in the Drama plain. Our producers from Eastern Macedonia are the Nico Lazaridi and Pavlidis estates.

Wine TypeKir-Yianni Ramnista 1997
1997 was one of the best vintages of 1990s in Naoussa. In this Ramnista the characteristic berry aromas of Xinomavro are abstracted and focused into a structure of extraordinary refinement. The earthy, mineral notes have almost faded away. The sensations left by this wine are suggestive and mysterious.

Wine TypeKir-Yianni Ramnista 1999
A good example of pure Xinomavro, still young with considerable ageing potential but enjoyable now. Strong berry aromas on the nose with traces of olive. Gamey/savoury undertow on the palate. Strong but well balanced tannins. Subtle finish. Superb with meat dishes.

Wine TypeKir-Yianni Samaropetra 2003
Made at the Kir-Yianni winery at Amyndeo and named after the adjacent 10 hectare vineyard this crisp and fresh wine is a bestseller in Greece. If the nose betrays the presence of Sauvignon Blanc, the body is dominated by the less familiar flavours of Roditis. The 2003 may be less "spritzy" than a year ago but it remains flavourful and fresh.
