EMERY (Dodecanese, Greece)

Emery began operations as a maker of spirits in 1923 taking its name from a Grand Master of the Knights of St John at Rhodes at the beginning of the sixteenth century. The company turned to wine making in the 1960s and in 1974 built a winery in the mountain village of Embonas where it vinifies grapes grown on the slopes of Rhodesís highest mountain, Attavyros. Emery focuses on the native grapes, Athiri among the whites and Amorgiano, the local version of Mandilaria among the reds. A clutch of recent awards at Brussels and Thessaloniki confirms Emeryís preeminence in this field; the Athiri is among the best expressions of this grape that we have tasted.

Wine TypeEmery Athiri 2004
This wine (of which 30,000 bottles were produced) is from a single vineyard of 2.8 hectares located near Embonas at an altitude of 750-800 metres with a north west orientation. The vines are 15-18 years old and planted on stony ground with light clay. A classic but gentle method of vinification has been followed resulting in a delicate, fresh wine. There are notes of pear, honey and lime, excellent acidity and a quite distinctive minerality.
